My First Year in Testing

I started writing this to the tune of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air before I quickly discovered that it’s already been done (and much better than what I’d written!).

So I googled Top Parody Songs and came up with this, I hope it gets a chuckle or two.

My First Year Working QA

(to the tune of Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus)

Walking onto base with a smile on my face
Learned I’ll be a Dad again
Talking to the Chief and would you believe
They’re sending me to the Oce-an
Looked at the Fleet Plan, everything will be fine
But then I see, I’ll be away for a really long time
This is all so crazy
I’m gonna miss the birth of my baby

My mind is racing and my futures not too clear
The Navy’s great but I really wanna stay near
That’s when I started searching for a new career
And a change was coming on
And a change was coming on
And a change was coming on

So I throw my hands up
Time to move on, find a job where I can stay
I’m noddin’ my head like, ‘yeah’
Movin’ my hips like, ‘yeah’
Made my mind up, but where do I start?
I’ve got to start fresh today
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA

Jumping online just trying to find
A place where I can be great
I’d like IT but I haven’t studied
I wonder if I’m just too late
So I reach out for some advice
What happens next is nice
Next thing I know I’m at a meeting
Well, it’s a cafe and I’m eating

They said “have you ever thought about a job in testing?”
Couldn’t believe what my mind was wrestling
A trial period was the next thing
Time to get some study done
Time to get some study done
Time to get some study done

So I wrote a plan up,
Googled some stuff, hoping to learn enough
I’m noddin’ my head like, ‘yeah’
Movin’ my hips like, ‘yeah’
Made my mind up, but where do I start?
I’ve got to start fresh today
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA

There’s so much stuff that’s new to me (new to me)
And a great community (community)
So glad I found this industry (industry)
We’re really drowning in opportunity

So I put my hands up
I love the new job, learning stuff everyday
I’m noddin’ my head like, ‘yeah’ (noddin’ my head)
Movin’ my hips like, ‘yeah’ (ooh yeah)
Gotta get my skills up, get the job done
I’ve got to start fresh today
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA

So I put my hands up
I love the new job, learning stuff everyday
I’m noddin’ my head like, ‘yeah’ (noddin’ my head)
Movin’ my hips like, ‘yeah’ (ooh yeah)
Gotta get my skills up, get the job done
I’ve got to start fresh today
Yeah, it’s my first year working QA
Yeah (ha-ha-ha-ha), it’s my first year working QA

MileyBug
Miley spotted a bug in production!

I picked this song because I thought it would be funny, then oddly enough when I read the actual lyrics I found it actually had some parallels with the topic.

She was moving to a glitzy new city and worried about not fitting in, or being able to adapt to her new environment.¬† I wasn’t sure if I had the skills/experienced I needed to work in testing, or if I’d be able to pick them up fast enough to be an asset to the company.

Well shit. Who knew a Miley song could have such depth?

I guess it’s a bit like when people ask how to define quality – it’s completely contextual.

I wouldn’t say that the song fits my definition of being a quality song, but it fit perfectly for the purpose of writing a light-hearted song.

I started testing full-time in October 2017, the past year has been fantastic and I feel like there’s so much more to look forward to.

Highlights of the year gone by:

  • Baby #2 born in December. Bought a house, “finished” renovating and moved in.
  • Was able to work part-time before my full-time testing job started, this was really helpful to show me what gaps I had and needed to start fixing
  • Started bug-hunting on uTest, which was a nice easy paced intro to testing
  • Started a full-time role in software testing
  • Passed my ISTQB CTFL (haven’t needed it, but learning the terminology and some base concepts were helpful)
  • Recorded a podcast with Dan, James and Tom on the SuperTesting Bros podcast
  • Started writing the blog to document my progress in learning the OWASP Top Ten, since expanded the topics and have had visitors from over 40 different countries!
  • Found a handful of interesting podcasts and blogs to help learn more
  • Attended a few different meetups and have been involved in organising some stuff through WeTest which has been really cool (in particular the Intro to Accessibility testing session which I was really proud of)
  • Completed the 30 Days of E-Commerce Testing challenge through the Ministry of Testing
  • Offered a part-time/remote role with the New Zealand Defence Force’s new Innovation branch which has been quite cool and fits around my day-job
  • Enjoyed a few online mentoring sessions with Maaret Pyhajarvi looking at exploratory testing – which was fantastic
  • Started pair testing the OWASP JuiceShop with Magda Oszer which was a lot of fun
  • Attended a LockSport meetup and can now pick locks, well the easy ones at least
  • Started learning basic test automation using Selenium Webdriver through WeTest
  • Was really welcomed and encouraged at my new workplace

Things to look forward to:

  • I was lucky enough to be awarded an AST scholarship for early next year! This will cover a year’s membership to the AST (Association for Software Testing) and course costs for the BBST (Black Box Software Testing) Foundations 2.0 course – absolutely stoked and will be covering the experience on the blog
  • Have been invited to guest on the Business of Testing podcast with Johan Steyn
  • Bought a ticket to the Auckland WeTest Conference for the 25th of October, really looking forward to this as there are some great speakers attending.
  • Shortly after the conference, we’re looking at launching an Intro to Security testing session through the WeTest slack channel and various meetups, this will be pretty cool.
  • I’ve been studying towards sitting the Scrum.org PSM1¬†certification and hope to sit the exam before the end of the year.
  • My role at work has been re-configured, I’ll still be in charge of testing but doing a lot more customer facing stuff too which will be interesting

Thanks for reading my stuff and joining in.

Cheers,

Mike
